01/06/2012 - Experiment #2

Microwave Experiment
Aim of the Experiment:
To find out the time taken for water to be microwaved to boiling point, 100°c

Apparatus:
·         1 microwave
·         1 laboratory thermometer
·         1 measuring cup
·         1 measuring cup
·         Tap water

Steps of Experiment:
1.       From Experiment #1, amount of water to keep a sponge moist is known.
2.       Fill measuring cup with the amount of water.
3.       Pour this amount of water in the microwaveable cup.
4.       Repeat Steps 2 and 3 nine more times; thus, the total amount of times Steps 2 and 3 are repeated is 10. This is going along the fact that there would be 10 sponges in each batch.
5.       Place a thermometer in the microwaveable cup.
6.       Place the microwaveable cup in the microwave.
7.       Switch on the microwave, turning the timer to 1 minute.
8.       Check temperature of water through thermometer after 1 minute of microwaving.
9.       If temperature is less than 100°c, slowly increase the timer after repeating Steps 1 to 6.
10.   Repeat Step 9 until temperature reaches 100°c.
11.   If temperature is more than 100°c, slowly decrease the timer after repeating Steps 1 to 6.
12.   Repeat Step 11 until temperature reaches 100°c.
13.   If temperature is exactly at 100°c, experiment is concluded.
